I paint because…

I love to paint with a loaded brush. In the summertime, I prefer to be outside “en plein air”. I find this kind of painting intoxicating. It assists in filling the canvas with atmosphere. Afterward I bring it back to the studio and do some corrections or some times a larger version of the painting. The old architecture of Saint John New Brunswick excites me. The landscapes of New Brunswick and Newfoundland are my some of my favourite subjects to paint. During the winter in my studio, I often take a palette knife and load it with paint and play with it on the canvas; often a very textural floral picture emerges.

Art is outward sign of what is happening on the interior landscape of soul. Art is grace, a true gift from the creator to the creature. To be complete art must go full circle. In the beginning something is created from nothing, it is observed and calls forth a response. It then must be released to do its work and the artist is free to move on to the next creation. It is a very liberating process.
